About Engraving

Traditional hand-engraving utilizes single-point engraving tools and is the same technique that has been used for hundreds of years, though is rarely seen in the mass-production world of today. The tools are fashioned from a length of steel, sharpened to a keen edge, and inserted into a handle. The engraving tool, held in the artist’s hand, is expertly guided through the metal, precisely removing small ribbons of metal to expose the design.

Each individually cut line, result in varying width and depth, slowly coaxing the design from the metal. There is truly no comparison to the graceful beauty and appeal of traditional hand-engraved items – the variation of depth and texture, the arcs of the lines, and their reflection of light.

Hand-engraving is a delicate art that requires many years of practice to master successfully. In fact, most items today claiming to be engraved are merely “scratched” into the surface by a machine.

ADW Designs specializes in creating unique jewelry and hand-engraved gifts.
